The Broad Experience

I incubated and launched this podcast in 2012 while I was part of CUNY’s entrepreneurial journalism program.

Back then women and the workplace wasn’t a topic that got a lot of attention. Still, I was intrigued by the gap between women’s achievements at school and their achievements at work.

I had also realized relatively late that the career advice I’d been given - ‘work hard and you’ll be recognized’ - was over-simplified, to say the least.

So I set out to make a show that looked beneath the surface at some of the less discussed reasons why women’s experiences at work are so different from men’s.

But I knew from the start I didn’t want this to be a depressing show where women lamented their collective lot. I would never listen to a show like that myself, and I certainly didn’t plan to make one.

The idea was always to inspire listeners and encourage them to consider different points of view. To enable them to learn from the women they’re hearing, and take something away that they can use in their own lives - even if it’s only the knowledge that they’re not alone.

The podcast features smart women - and occasionally men - of all ages and backgrounds. Everyone from executives to construction workers to firefighters.

The show, which wrapped up early in 2023, received many accolades over the years, from publications from Gawker to The Economist.
